A total solar eclipse is one of the most stunning phenomena one can experience. And if you are like me, once you have seen one, you start to plan for future eclipses. I have so far experienced five total solar eclipses, three of them without blocking clouds. And I am pretty sure I will be on or very near the center line for future eclipses as well.
See here for a list of all solar eclipses in the 21st century. Nasa also has a very informative eclipse site, see here.
| August 11, 1999 in Germany | This was my first total solar eclipse. Together with two friends, I saw it from southern Germany. Cloudlayer was broken but we managed to relocate a few minutes before totality to a place where we could see the sun between the clouds. 15 minutes after the total eclipse, it was heavy rain. |
| July 22, 2009 in China | My second total solar eclipse, and the longest one in the 20th century. I experienced the eclipse from China during a family holiday. It was fully overcast so no sights of the sun during the eclipse. |
| March 20, 2015 from Svalbard | My third total solar eclipse, and my first one in perfect weather, no clouds, no wind and minus 20 degrees celsius (minus 4 degrees fahrenheit). See here for a full description. |
| August 21, 2017 from Oregon | My fourth total solar eclipse, and my second one in perfect weather. See here for a full description. |
| April 8th, 2024 from Texas | My fifth total solar eclipse, not the most spectacular one due to broken clouds. See here. |

| August 12, 2026 | I plan to see this one from west of Reykjavik, probably airborne from my airplane above the unavoidable clouds in Iceland. |
| August 2, 2027 | I plan to see this from a friend’s apartment west of Malaga in Spain. |
| July 22, 2028 | This will be an obvious reason for my first trip to Australia. |
| November 25, 20230 | This will be a good reason for going to Namibia or Botswana. |
| March 30, 2033 | This will be yet another reason for going back to Alaska. The eclipse will be visible from Nome. |
