Climbing Mt. Kazbek

August 2025 – Together with my youngest son Troels, I climbed and summited Mt. Kazbek, a 5,054 m. or 16,581 ft. high volcano in the Caucasus, right on the border between Russia and Georgia.

From our hotel in Stepantsminda to Altihud (low base camp)

On the first day of the climb, we started at 2,200 meters close to the historical 14th-century Trinity Church and hiked up to Altihud, a really nice Swiss mountain hut at 3,014 meters of altitude.

From Altihud to Bethlemi Hut (high base camp)

On the second day, we climbed from Altihud to Bethlemi Hut at 3,653 meters of altitude, a mere 4 km hike with only 600 meters of altitude gain. During this hike, we crossed the Kazbegi Glacier.

On the third day, we stayed at Bethlemi Hut doing an acclimatization hike and some ice axe training.

From Bethlemi Hut to the summit and back

Finally, on the fourth day at 2am, we started the summit climb. We ascended 1,400 meters and reached the summit after 6 hours and 30 minutes.

Thanks to The Alpine Project for guiding and logistics. And thanks to good friends from Belgium and Spain for being on this adventure with us.
