Flying into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

July 2025 – This year I managed to fly into the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the worlds biggest fly-in and airshow with 700,000+ visitors and 10,000+ aircrafts. I flew in via the Fisk Arrival in my Cessna 185 to runway 18R. Before I flew in I studied the 20 page NOTAM very carefully.

From Toronto to Milwaukee

July 22nd – I picked up my Cessna 185 in Brampton (CNC3) close to Toronto and flew it all the way to Milwaukee (KMWC), not over Lake Michigan but along the southern and western cost close by downtown Chicago. I cleared customs and immigration into US at St. Clare County (KPHN) and had another break at Southwest Michigan Regional (KBEH).

Flying into the airshow

July23rd – My friend Thomas Bjørn (TheBearPilot) came down to Milwaukee to fly the Fisk Arrival together with me. We headed for the small airport in Milwaukee in the early morning in order to try to get into Oshkosh before rush-hour on the Fisk Arrival procedure. We took off at around 7am and headed directly for Green Lake, the entry point for the procedure used that morning. But before reaching the entry point severe bad weather forced us to deviate for Fond du Lac (KFLD) where we waited an hour before the weather cleared up. When we finally joined the Fisk Arrival procedure, at precisely 1,800 feet at precisely 90 knots as described in the NOTAM, we had airplanes all over. Most of them behaved well, but numerous airplanes found holes in the long queue of airplanes flying the procedure, we were not impressed!

The following fire screenshots from my iPad running ForeFlight shows the bad weather, our combined route from Milwaukee (KMWC) to Oshkosh (KOSH) via Fond du Lac (KFLD), our route from Fond du Lac (KFLD) to Oshkosh (KOSH). The last two screenshots show how much traffic we had around us flying the Fisk Arrival procedure.

Meeting my oldest son

My son Søren works for Piper Aircraft and he attended EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for the third time. After landing I was of cause eager to get to the Piper Stand to see my son and meet with all the other nice Piper people (especially from European Aircraft Sales in Odense, Denmark (EKOD)) I have got to know through Søren.

Enjoying the daily airshows

July 23rd to July 26th – For four days in a row I walked around on the huge area occupied by thousands of airplanes and watched the daily airshows…

Night shows

There were also two night shows with planes, fireworks, planes doing fireworks, bombs and drones…

Departure

July 27th – Sunday was my last day, I got up and packed my tent, prepared the airplane for take off and got my place in the queue for departure. Even though four to five planes took off every minute it still took me half an hour in the queue before I got my spot on the runway and got clearance for take off…
