November 2024 – During summer 2024, my Cessna 185 had been upgraded with new avionics by Rite Way Aviation at David Wayne Hooks Airport (KDWH) in Houston. The new avionics included a PFD (Primary Flight Display, Garmin g3x Touch), a new GPS (Garmin GPS 175), and a new auto pilot (Garmin FFC 500). The autopilot was not yet certified on my type of aircraft when equipped with flaperons (Robertson STOL Kit) so Garmin Flight Test Center at New Century Aircenter Airport (KIXD) borrowed my plane to do the certification paperwork.
And then in November 2024, I came back to pick up my airplane and decided to take it northbound to its new home for the next year, a hangar at Brampton-Caledon Airport (CNC3) close to Toronto.
Over five days I flew from Kansas City east around Chicago, up the west coast of Lake Michigan, across the border into Canada between the two airports in Sault Ste Marie, south along the northeast coast of Lake Huron down to Niagara Falls, then northbound over Lake Ontario into Toronto City Airport and then over to a small but very charming and active GA airport only 12 nautical miles from Toronto Intl. During the trip I landed at Southeast Iowa Regional (KBRL), Illinois Valley Regional (KVYS), Lawrence J Timmerman (KMWC), Door County Cherryland (KSUE), Washington Island (2P2), Sault Ste Marie Municipal (KANJ), Sault Ste Marie Airport (CYAM), Wiarton Airport (CYVV), Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre (CYTZ), Burlington Executive Airpark (CZBA) and finally at Brampton-Caledon Airport (CNC3). Along the route, I flew close by Chicago and Toronto city center, and right over Niagara Falls.
At Brampton-Caledon Airport (CNC3) I found a nice hangar for rent. And they can do the upcoming annual inspection on my airplane. From this airport very close to Toronto Intl., my Cessna 185 is now perfectly located for a summer trip up into Canada, up to Churchill, or maybe even Resolute Bay.
