Four trips to Litli-Hrútur

July 2023 – For the third summer in a row, an eruption took place on Reykjanes, the area in Iceland between Keflavik (with the international airport of Iceland) and Reykjavik (the capital of Iceland). I spent a week in Iceland and went into the eruption site four times, three times by feet and one time in an old Cessna 170.

First visit to Litli-Hrútur – I hiked 27 kms across Reykjanes Peninsula, from highway 41 in the north to road 427 in the south. I climbed Keilir on the way, a smaller top I have wanted to climb for years. And I spent five amazing hours at the eruption site of Litli-Hrútur 🙂

Second trip to Litli-Hrútur – Litli-Hrútur by night. I hiked 17 kms forth and back along the eastern route from road 427 (parking area 4) into the volcano.

Third trip into Litli-Hrútur – This time I hiked along the western route from road 427 (parking area 1), a roundtrip og 19 kms. The views from a nearby top was amazing…

Fourth and last trip into Litli-Hrútur – My last trip into the eruption site was in TF-KAF, an old Cessna 170. I circled the eruption site for 20 minutes together with four helicopters and another fixed wing aircraft. During my visit, the northern wall of the crater collapsed and huge amounts of lava flowed out. I also circled the old eruption site from 2021 a couple of times.

I brought a drone to Iceland during my 2023 July visit and made this video from my footage. Enjoy 🙂
