Alaska – Volcanoes and Bears

August 2018 – Alaska, volcanoes and bears. Ten days in Alaska, together with my friend Niels Bagge. And my Super Cub which I keep in Wolf Lake with Alaska Cub Training Specialists.

You never know if or where you find good flyable weather in Alaska. But this time the forecast was very unusual, especially for the Aleutian Islands where there were no storms, rains or fog forecasted for a whole week! So after a short detour via lovely Talkeetna we headed down towards Cold Bay, the furthest place where we could get aviation gasoline.

The trip from Talkeetna to Cold Bay took three days where we flew by a number of active volcanoes and saw numerous brown bears. Especially fascinating was off field landing in Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, flying around and landing off field on Augustine Island with its beautiful Augustine Volcano, flying over Mount Katmai and flying through Aniakchak National Monument. Outbound to Cold Bay we flew along the north cost of the Aleutian. most of the time 50 ft above sea (beach) level. At every river crossed along the beach we saw bears and thousands of seals, and once we saw a huge walrus colony.
